Abstract

The use of a pulse forming laser source, improved by a closed loop power output control to stabilize the laser spot welding process of copper and dissimilar copper welds. The research objective is the increased stability of the laser spot welding process of copper and dissimilar copper welds. This will be possible using a pulsed laser and a closed loop power output control that dynamically modulates the laser pulse in order to produce consistent results. While doing so the system’s design must be kept as simple as possible, plus it has to be integrated into the existing power output control and pulse forming laser source. The control parameters have to be conform to  the properties of the materials to be joined. In addition a process control is to be integrated. An increase of reproducibility of properties of spot welds at a reasonable cost has to be verified on industrial application samples. Increasing the laser welding process stability allows the execution of challenging joining tasks e.g. in the fields of solar engineering and photovoltaics. These fields gain importance because of the increasing use of alternative and renewable energy. These points put small and medium-sized companies in positions to use the full potential of pulse modulated laser sources producing components out earlier mentioned materials, plus gaining a competitive advantage.
