Abstract

The analysis of existing views on the nature of plastic friction during rolling has been performed, controversial provisions and contradictions have been marked, and also the discussion evaluating the fundamentals, particularly, the relationship between external and internal friction during plastic deformation. Several provisions of the basic science of tribology have been noted not to be applicable to the theory of plastic friction. Formulating the issue to create the standard, which would include the provision of plastic friction, is untimely, as the contradictions existing in this area of science are still not eliminated. The topic of friction laws and models as their applicability to the problems of contact interaction during rolling deserves a separate discussion.
